Wagering Requirements Explained: How to Calculate a Bonus's Real Value

Wagering requirements are the mechanism that turns a "€500 free bonus" into something considerably less than that. Understanding them is the difference between using bonuses intelligently and being used by them. This guide gives you the maths, the terminology and a simple method for judging any offer in under a minute.

What a wagering requirement is

When a casino gives you bonus money, it attaches a condition: you must bet a multiple of that bonus before the bonus and any winnings from it can be withdrawn. That multiple is the wagering requirement, also called playthrough or rollover.

A €100 bonus with a 35x wagering requirement means you must place €3,500 in bets before the funds unlock. Winning or losing along the way does not matter; only total turnover counts.

Bonus only vs. deposit plus bonus

This is the single biggest source of confusion. Two casinos can both advertise "35x wagering" and one can require double the turnover of the other:

Game weighting: not every bet counts equally

Casinos assign each game type a contribution percentage towards wagering:

The maximum bet rule

In this example you expect to lose €140 clearing a €100 bonus. That does not make the bonus worthless: it gives you €3,500 of play for an expected net cost of €40 (€140 minus the €100 bonus), which is cheaper than playing without it. But it is not free money, and treating it that way is how players end up chasing.

Sticky vs. non-sticky bonuses

A sticky bonus mixes your deposit and bonus into one balance immediately. Everything is locked until wagering is complete.

A non-sticky (or "parachute") bonus keeps your deposit separate. You play with real money first; the bonus is only activated if you lose your deposit. If you win with your own money, you can withdraw at any time and simply forfeit the untouched bonus. Non-sticky bonuses are strictly better for players and are increasingly common at European-licensed casinos.

Maximum cashout limits

Some bonuses, especially no-deposit offers, cap the amount you can withdraw from bonus winnings (for example, "max cashout €100"). On deposit matches this is rare at reputable casinos and a red flag when present. Always check.
